What Are Mr Wolfberry™ Goji Berries?

Goji is a scarlet coloured berry with a delightfully sweet taste. A member of the solancea family, the wolfberry bush (lycium barbarum) is found in the north west of China (lycium chinense is grown in southern China).

Because of its nutrient value and pleasant taste, Chinese people have been growing this herb for hundreds of years on the Ningxia flood plain between the Tibetan Plateau and Inner Mongolia.

Water derived from the Himalayas flows down the Yellow River and across the Ningxia plains, carrying with it an assortment of minerals and organic nutrients.

The wolfberry bush blooms between April and October and is harvested from June to October depending on the weather and growing areas. When ready for harvest the fruit turns a bright red, is nearly oblong in shape and quite plump. Fullness in shape, brightness of colour and sweetness demonstrate the best quality of fruit. When picked from the bush and eaten, the berry should be very juicy and sweet to taste.

Once picked, the berries are sun-dried over 5 days and then sorted by quality according to size prior to packing.

Farmers believe that temperature extremes between -20°C and +40°C, combined with the mineral rich alkaline soils are contributing factors as to why the berry is so highly nutritious.

The main active component of the berry is the Lycium Barbarum Polysaccharide (LBP). The amount of LBP may vary depending on the type of wolfberry; the better the quality the higher percentage of LBP.

Wolfberry also contains 19 types of amino acids and 21 trace minerals as well as being high in Vitamin C and protein.

In 1983, the Ministry of the Public Health of China approved wolfberry to be marketed as a natural food and botanical medicine.
